Track Tension: How to perform it correctly on CNF mini-dumpers and mini-excavators

Add header text here

Track tension is a fundamental aspect of routine maintenance on mini-dumpers and mini-track loaders, often subject to differing interpretations between operators and mechanics. However, to ensure safety, efficiency, and a long service life for the machine, it is essential to follow correct and standardised procedures.

When to replace rubber tracks

The end of life for tracks is mainly determined by tread wear: when traction is no longer sufficient to work effectively, it's time for replacement.

However, wear and tear isn't always the only cause. External events, such as damage to the internal steel cables or the action of atmospheric agents, can necessitate early intervention.

After replacement: how to correctly tension the tracks

Once the new tracks are installed, it is essential to perform correct tensioning to avoid damage to the undercarriage and maintain the machine's efficiency.

CNF has defined an official workshop procedure, unique and valid for all models, which precisely describes how to proceed with tensioning. The method varies according to the type of tensioner fitted.

Tensioning systems: screw or grease

CNF models up to 900 kg capacity, including the Minidumper CNF T70, they adopt a screw system with a locking nut. This solution is quick, intuitive and requires the use of a single spanner to achieve the right tension in just a few minutes.

For higher-end models, such as the T150 (1500 kg capacity) and the compact track loader XT500, a grease system is used. In this case, the tensioner is accessed by opening the relevant inspection hatch, to inject grease into the nozzle and reach the necessary pressure.

Both solutions guarantee the same result in terms of effectiveness and durability, adapting to different needs.

Simple maintenance, with CNF support

Regularly tensioning the tracks helps to avoid premature wear, abnormal vibrations, and damage to undercarriage components. The CNF technical team is always available to assist operators and workshops, providing support at every stage of maintenance.
