Track tension is a fundamental aspect of routine maintenance on tracked minidumpers and skid steer loaders, which is often subject to different interpretations between operators and mechanics. However, to ensure the safety, efficiency and long life of the machine, it is essential to follow correct and standardised procedures.
When to replace the rubber tracks
The end of a track’s life is mainly determined by the wear of the tread: when traction is no longer sufficient to work effectively, it’s time to replace it.
Wear is not always the only cause, however. External events such as damage to the internal steel cables or the action of atmospheric agents can make early intervention necessary.
After replacement: how to tension the tracks correctly
Once the new tracks have been installed, it is essential to tension them correctly, to avoid damage to the undercarriage and maintain machine performance.
CNF has defined an official workshop procedure, which is the same and valid for all models and which describes precisely how to tension the track. The method varies according to the type of track tensioner mounted.
Tensioning systems: screw or grease
The CNF models with a capacity of up to 900 kg, including the CNF T70 minidumper, use a screw system with a locking nut. This solution is quick, intuitive and requires the use of a single wrench to achieve the right tension in just a few minutes.
A grease system is used for larger models, such as the T150 (1500 kg capacity) and the XT500 tracked skid steer loader. In this case, the track tensioner is accessed by opening the appropriate inspection door, injecting grease into the nozzle and reaching the necessary pressure.
Both solutions ensure the same result in terms of effectiveness and duration, adapting to different needs.
Simple maintenance, with CNF support
Regularly tensioning the tracks helps to avoid premature wear, abnormal vibrations and damage to undercarriage components. The CNF technical team is always available to assist operators and workshops, providing support in every maintenance phase.
